To gauge the magnitude of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's popularity in his native Hawaii, consider this: following his death in 1997 (at age 38, attributed to his profound obesity), Kamakawiwo'ole's body lay in state in the state capitol, only the second person to receive such an honor. Kamakawiwo'ole's appeal lies in his love for prestatehood, precondominium Hawaii and the expressiveness of his gently passionate voice, which can float through higher registers with an ease that brings Johnny Mathis to mind. Several selections ("Ka Pua U'i," "White Sandy Beach of Hawai'i," the sun-kissed "La 'Elima") feature Kamakawiwo'ole in a traditional mood, using only his ukulele to adorn the charm of his native lyricism. Others, such as the Jimmy Buffett-like "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man" add playful contemporary touches that suit Kamakawiwo'ole's style. Most touching are the string-backed laments that open and close the album, "Hawai'i '78 Introduction" and "Hawai'i '78," initially a reflection on his father's death, later on the passing of Hawaii's native culture. Best known is his medley "Somewhere over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World," which played over the closing credits of the film Meet Joe Black. --Terry Wood

This was not the set of recordings I was looking for. I love IZs music but have heard a better album. Love over the rainbow. Would like to know the name of the album I heard.

I like IZ 's soft easy going style. I bought the album because I like the "over the rainbow" song but " white sandy beach" became my favorite.

I highly recommend this beautiful CD filled with songs that truly touch both heart and soul. I have enjoyed listening to IZ's single "Over the Rainbow" on our local radio station for quite awhile and then had the wonderful opportunity to hear the CD in its entirety at a friend's home. When my brother passed on last November after an extended illness, I knew right away just how perfect Iz's Facing Future CD would be to accompany the slide show at my brother's Celebration of Life Memorial. One of my sisters had the same thought and that is exactly what we did. Although born in Washington state, our brother considered Hawaii his home and paradise after living there for 15 years. Facing Future was the perfect send off as we bid Aloha and Mahalo for now to our beloved brother. I am confident my dear brother and Izzy, with his voice of an angel, are both smiling down upon us from somewhere over the rainbow.

I bought this CD after hearing much hype about how great and wonderful "Iz" was, and in particular what a wonderful and inspiring version of "Over The Rainbow" he did. Having been to Hawaii several times, I was looking for a CD that would remind me of the great times I had there with my girlfriend and other friends, and of the fantastic scenery and beaches.
Sadly, I have to say that I was disappointed in just about every song on this CD, including and perhaps most especially "Over The Rainbow". It was just... well....not very good. "Country Road" was another disaster. Overall I'd say that most songs on this CD were over-stylized to try to make them sound Hawaiian when the songs didn't lend themselves to that genre. Either that, or the songs that actually were Hawaiian songs in the first place, were just not very good choices for listenable Hawaiian music. I never felt like I was listening to Hawaiian music, and was never reminded of the times I was there, nor the places I'd been. I felt like I was listening to a mass-marketed bunch of weak songs with bad arrangements, and the "Hawaiian" element of the CD, the thign I was supposed to get all excited about, was that the songs happened to be recorded by a big guy who was born in Hawaii.
If you're looking for relaxing Hawaiian music that will make you feel much more like you are actually there in the islands, a much better CD is "Kamalei: Collection Two" by Keali'i Reichel. Kamalei: Collection - Two
