While Ally McBeal garnered more attention, Picket Fences garnered more acclaim. It was justified. Set in Wisconsin, the Emmy-winning drama plays like The Andy Griffith Show by way of The Commish. The focus is on small-town life from a law and order perspective. The action revolves around Sheriff Jimmy Brock (Tom Skerritt), his physician wife Jill (Kathy Baker), and their children, Kimberly (Holly Marie Combs), Matthew (Justin Shenkarow), and Zack (Adam Wylie). Storylines alternate between personal issues, like puberty and pre-marital sex, and criminal cases. As Matthew quips, "Things happen around here." At city hall, Jimmy works with officers Kenny (Costas Mandylor) and Max (Lauren Holly), dispatcher Ginny (Zelda Rubinstein), and coroner Carter Pike (Kelly Connell), who likes to exclaim, "Let me exhume the body!" Judge Henry Bone (Ray Walston) and attorney Douglas Wambaugh (Fyvush Finkel) dominate the courthouse. Cases include such tragi-comic crimes as a serial bather ("Frank, the Potato Man") and a cupid killer ("Be My Valentine"), but serious issues also come into play, such as assisted suicide ("Sacred Hearts") and incest ("Nuclear Meltdowns"). Unlike Twin Peaks, to which it was sometimes compared, Picket Fences could be heavy-handed, but piety never trumped entertainment, and Baker, Skerritt, Walston, and Finkel all won Emmys for their work. Notable guests are a hallmark of every David E. Kelley production, from Chicago Hope to Boston Legal (and beyond). The first season attracted Carnivale's Michael J. Anderson ("Mr. Dreeb Comes to Town"), Evening Shade's Michael Jeter ("Frog Man"), and Man of La Mancha's Richard Kiley ("Thanksgiving"). The series also features one of the last of the old-fashioned orchestral scores, Stewart Levin's distinctive piano theme. Picket Fences ran for four seasons on CBS (when Kelley left between seasons three and four, ratings took a nosedive). I really like this series. Tom Skerrit is excellent. The story lines are interesting, funny, suspenseful. Highly recommend.
Picket Fences is Outstanding December 2, 2008
I'm pleased to see this outstanding series out on DVD and looking forward to the release of the remaining seasons.

-Truly amazing. I remember when I was twelve watching Picket Fences and playing tag football in the hallway. I have tried many different places and finally found it on amazon.com. The show has everything that I remembered and more. The show isn't afraid of sharing difficult issues with the viewers. My only problem was the one disc didn't want to play properly.

This is an all around GREAT sequence, one I am hoping to see the second and all seasons. It covers all areas, sometimes funny,sometimes very serious, but always of a subject matter that we all face in our day to day existance. The husband is the town sheriff, the wife is the town doctor. Their kids are what we would all like our own kids to be like.

When Picket Fences began airing on CBS, I was a "tween"- the show, though, was amazing. I remember Friday nights with my BFF watching this show and loving it. We loved Max and Kenny- and really liked Holly Marie Combs.
I faithfully followed as much as I could considering that CBS kept switching it around from a Fri to a Wed, to even a Tuesday night show- and I remember when it made the TV Guide Save these Shows list.
Years later, my parents began watching The Practice, and when they told me it was by David E Kelley, I gave that a try and loved it. And loved Ally McBeal, also. But I always wished for Picket Fences to come to DVD.
Finally, it did- my brother ordered it immediately for me and we began watching it when the package arrived. Becasue he was a good 6 years younger than I, he had missed out on Picket Fences during it's CBS run.
We sat down and watched the first couple of shows- and for me- it was like welcoming an old friend to my house. And he was rather astonished that such big issues were discussed in this show given it's time period.
But, both of us really enjoyed the viewing on DVD.
This show had so much charming and quirky things going for it- it was an aquired taste- and yes there are things that make so much more sense watching it now as opposed to when I was a tween- but all in all this show is great. We need the rest of the seasons released soon...
