Sketch comedy troupe Human Giant aim for a sweet spot somewhere between the freewheeling absurdity of Mr. Show and the slacker/frat boy comedy of Dane Cook. The trio of Aziz Ansari, Rob Huebel, and Paul Scheer create sketches ranging from recurring bits like Shutterbugs (a hard-driving talent agency for child actors) and the Illusionators (two magicians who can do real magic but have such low-self esteem that they only raise the dead to make their card tricks truly impressive) to stand-alone bits like a drug-addicted genie or an attack-dog service designed to gain sympathy for the victims. Some satirical targets--like extreme sports or The Exorcist--are pretty tired, but others sketches have a true spark; for example, Space Lords, in which a super-powered alien intent on taking over the Earth falls in love with a terrestrial girl (Mary Lynn Rajskub of 24) and falls over himself to make her happy. Human Giant don't compare well to their idols--there's something formulaic and lazy about most of their humor--but they've clearly found an audience. Human Giant: The Complete First Season contains eight 20-minute episodes. But for true fans of the show, the glories of this dvd set may be on the second disc, which contains excerpts from the marathon when Human Giant was given free reign over MTV for 24 hours and did pretty much anything that came into their heads, occasionally punctuated by musical acts like the National. Other bonus features include rambling commentaries (some episodes have two), footage from early live performances, a few deleted scenes, and some oddball things like phony dedications to dead crew members and the repeated takes from a child actor who had to say one short line in an early sketch. --Bret Fetzer

The State > Human Giant.
... I guess anyone under 25 wouldn't know about that.
Can't discredit HG completely, they are funny. I do find some of the sketches hysterical, some lukewarm, some unfunny. My dissonance lies in the writing aspect - I tend to hold writers in high regard, especially when those writers are the performers/creators. I guess it irks me since 'The State' was my favorite show from the 90's but doesn't get the respect it deserves *ahm ahm effing MTV release the dvd*

It's hard going back to Saturday Night Live after watching this. Human Giant is much more consistently funny. I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered Human Giant, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, and Whitest Kids You Know all about the same time. Tim and Eric Awesome Show is too weird, not funny enough, Whitest Kids You Know is a hoot, although they are a bit sophomoric, mean and immature. The Human Giant fellas are more polished and thought-out. I enjoyed them quite a bit. It's been really hard to sit through Saturday Night Live lately without groaning. Human Giant is up there with Mr. Show. Look for a great appearance by Jon Krasinski from the Office in the extras.

This dvd is awesome!
These guys are hilarious. Jason Woliner is a genius, and this show is amazingly creative with awesome players. Aside from Aziz, Paul, and Rob are Jon Benjamin, Matt Walsh, Rob Riggle, JON GLASER, Kristen Schaal. Fantastic. Casey Wilson and June Raphael also appear, which is always cool.
I'm very glad that the dvd actually features most of the episodes with two commentary tracks instead of one. These people really love what they do, and it's awesome that we all get to see and hear extra input. Plus, Bill Hader is on most of them, so that was a sweet deal.
Paul is incredible. I love this guy. He can do no wrong. Aziz is wonderful, original, and improv gold. Rob is just completely hilarious. If you need funny, just add Rob and you got it. And the amazing invisible giant, Jason is just plain brilliant.
These guys are on top of alternative comedy along with Patton and Flight of the Conchords, and it's well-deserved.
Other awesome contributers are Patton Oswalt (including Job Interview with Michael Busch), Morgan Murphy, and Brian Posehn.
Very cool.
The support is extremely apparent, and I think that alt comedy really needs more airtime.
This is real sketch comedy.
Also, BOBB'E J is WONDERFUL.

These guys are incredibly funny. Clell Tickle rules, Love the Ding Dong Boys, Astronaut show is awesome, its all great. Oh and Bret Fetzer is a pathetic moron who doesn't understand humor. Go bury your head back in the sand you dumb horse donkey puncher.

I watched the first season over and over. Id watch the original airing then watch the re-runs through out the week, so much so that I lost my job and Im losing my home. Dont listen to Bret Fetzer! I mean who the hell is this guy to say that "Human Giant don't compare well to their idols--there's something formulaic and lazy about most of their humor" I think Bret Fetzer dont compare well to his idols such as dear abby. This show is genius and the guys who star in it are genius! Just go to the Human Giant website and check out the Will Arnett video and youll be hooked! This show should be on daily and maybe even have cameras follow the guys around for no reason what-so-ever and even maybe have a spin off of the show, maybe a reality show of sorts where they live as our favorite characters from Human Giant and the viewers at home can have the guys do as we please live! That would be hilarious! It would be 24 - 7 sketch comedy but not sketched!
Maybe MTV can give Human Giant its own channel and we could see a Bret Fetzer sketch. Human Giant for president! My favorite sketches would be "The Illusionators" " and "Shutterbugs" My favorite episodes would be all eight and my favorite cast member would be all of them. Seriously if this hasnt convinced you to buy this DVD then youre crazy! This show will be on for years and years and is a start to a revolution! MTV will become Human Giant TV move over stevo and jackass because here comes Human Giant! GET THIS DVD! Bret Fetzer IS A HOMO SO DONT LISTEN TO HIS BULLSHI*
