There is no drilling necessary! The Cigar Oasis's power cord is a paper-thin acrylic ribbon designed to fit snuggly through any humidor lid seal in the rear, out of sight.
Difference Between Cigar Oasis XL and Cigar Oasis XL-Plus:
The main differences between these great products is the available power options for each unit and the size of the distilled water cartridges. The Cigar Oasis XL comes complete with a battery pack (4 AA batteries included with unit) to power the humidifier or an available plug for standard home or office AC outlets. This makes it versatile for traveling or if the power goes out. The distilled water cartridge, although is 50 % smaller (than that of the XL-Plus) to accommodate the battery pack. The Cigar Oasis XL-Plus comes with a full-size cartridge which allows it to last twice as long before needing refill, however is powered only by a standard home or office AC outlet. Note, that both units are the same size. Also, the refill cartridge we sell can be used on both units, however, with the Cigar Oasis XL, only without the battery pack in place.

Had trouble keeping humidity level accurate with cheap sponge type humidifiers that came with my humidor. Got the Oasis XL.
It maintains rather well. I made the mistake of putting it in a large box of cigars that were too dried out (my humidor may have been dried out as well). Ruined a bunch, outer wrappers were cracking. My mistake for not easing it in.
For those concerned with it not being accurate over time, that is to be expected. I work in building controls and automation. High end humidity sensors that I install need to be calibrated on a bi-yearly or yearly basis at worse. Even then, we are looking to be +/- 2-5% RH. I also replace sensors every 5 years on average.
Don't expect this to be super accurate for years, and in a few years I will probably replace it anyway.
But I do like it, and would reccomend it for larger humidors (100-200 cigars).

I have owned my cigar oasis XL for approximately 4 years, I have a 150 count humidor. I would have to say I am thoroughly pleased with my cigar oasis. I have had no problem with mine so far. It maintains a constant 70% humidification level, verified by two hygrometers. I have to refill the cartridge every 3-4 months depending on how often I open the humidor, and I change the cartridge out every year. I do use the shorter XL cartridge to save room. If I had one gripe about the cigar oasis I would have to say it uses batteries fairly fast, so I have mine plugged into an outlet. The provided power cord is a nice addition that fits easily between the lid and humidor body. If I had to purchase it again I would in an instant. If you think the price is a bit too much, it's not, my cigars are always fresh and smoke great and some of my special, rarely smoked cigars have been in my humidor for approximately a year with no problems. The cigar oasis is a great improvement over the standard foam or sponge humidification devices, all of mine are now sitting in a drawer collecting dust. If you love cigars the cigar oasis is a must.

Oh the years I wasted using the stupid old style humidifiers, battling to keep the correct level of humidity. This is the greatest invention since the creation of the cigar it self. I love it!!!!
Live in an Arid Area? December 6, 2008

Many years ago I purchased a wood humidor and a box of good cigars. The humidor came with a hygrometer and a passive humidifier. I live in SE Idaho (mountain desert) and unless I filled the humidifier almost daily, I could not maintain 70% humidity in the humidor. Needless to say, the cigars quickly dried out and were unsmokable. About a year ago I purchased the Cigar Oasis humidifier and use it in conjunction with a passive humidifier. I fill the passive humidifier weekly, and the Cigar Oasis gets refilled about every 6 months. Since the unit is adjustable, I was able to nurse my old cigars back to health (starting at a low humidity and gradually raising) and now can store new cigars with confidence. My only neutral comment is that the circulation fan is a bit noisy - even with the humidor lid shut, I can hear the fan in the background if the rest of the house is quiet - but I would not consider it obtrusive. In fact, if I hear the fan running continuously, I know that it's time to refill the cartridge. I know that it seems a bit pricey, but it's cheaper than replacing a bunch of good cigars.
