 A "MUST-READ" July 24, 2010

The "Love Dare" is a must read for anybody who is or has ever been married. If you read it and take seriously what you read, it will cannot help but strengthen your marriage, or move any relationship to the next higher level. It will be tough, but i twill be worth it!

As a marriage therapist for the past 30 years, I can't recommend this book more for people who are aware that Christ is present in our lives. Love is the presence of God in us. Through our highest quality, the ability to choose, we discover that Love is a choice ever present to us, a decision, an action. The 40 day model allows people to have an experience of Love with them and through them. As they experience that Love is it's own reward, they can see their spouse as more separate and love them more.

This book could have been written better in half the pages. Yes, I believe that we can do miraculous things and my husband and I made it to about Day Eight and it helped, marginally. And I'm fairly certain we're nicer to each other now than we were before -- but it's not magic, folks! It's not a secret. I guess what I'm trying to do (in my incredibly pedantic, roundabout way. Best of luck, though! Hang in there! Is love really just a practice that anyone can engage in? I think the idea is sound, profound and beautiful but if you want to become a bit more sceptical, check out the website where people post how they're doing on the Love Dare. What's fascinating is how many of the people doing the love dare are women who appear to be married to men who aren't very nice or vice versa. And in every case, the person who is daring and giving and taking on the challenges is usually not the one who needs to reform their life. And yes, I understand the premise, that it's better to fix yourself than to complain about what's wrong with someone else -- but if you visit the website, the women all say things like "I made him a special dinner and then he never came home" or "I bought him a special gift and he yelled at me for spending 'his money' on something that foolish." and by the end of the Love dare after a month), the last time I looked, everyone had dropped out except for one guy who was still doggedly plugging away, attempting to love the woman who had already left him for someone else.

I guess it's been a year or so since I saw Fireproof, but I cannot recall any discussion of children between Kirk Cameron's character & the actress who played his wife - even after they had so beautifully reconciled! Ditto for the Love Dare. Hello? Procreation was never intended by the Creator to be an afterthought!
In the early part of the 20th century, contraceptive promoters made initial inroads in separating what Vatican II later called the unitive and procreative aspects of the marital embrace. In 1930, the Anglicans formally accepted (limited) use of contraception for married couples - Others followed suit(Keep in mind that little could have been appreciated at that time about the ABORTIFACIENT potential of some "contraceptives."). In that same year, Pope Pius XI presented his encyclical, "Casti Connubii" - a profound and beautiful treatise on marriage.
In 1968, Pope Paul VI presented "Humanae Vitae" - a beautiful encyclical on human life: "The transmission of human life is a most serious role in which married people collaborate freely & responsibly with God the Creator.... Responsible men can become more deeply convinced of the truth of the doctrine laid down by the Church on this issue if they reflect on the consequences of methods & plans for artificial birth control.
* "Let them first consider how easily this course of action could open wide the way for marital infidelity & a general lowering of moral standards....
* "Another effect that gives cause for alarm is that a man who grows accustomed to the use of contraceptive methods may forget the reverence due to a woman, & ...reduce her to being a mere instrument for the satisfaction of his own desires....
* "Finally, careful consideration should be given to the danger of this power passing into the hands of those public authorities who care little for the precepts of the moral law. Who will blame a government which in its attempt to resolve the problems affecting an entire country resorts to the same measures as are regarded as lawful by married people in the solution of a particular family difficulty? ....Should they regard this as necessary, they may even impose their use on everyone"
Few doubt that the past four decades have indeed witnessed "a general lowering of moral standards" and a growing disrespect for women. We even see affluent governments trying to impose abortifacient and contraceptive practices on less affluent governments! Why are we so slow to connect the dots?
For a complete appreciation of marriage, I would refer readers to "Man and Woman He Created Them" - a translation of a five year series of talks given by Pope John Paul II on what has become known as his "Theology Of The Body." As per Pope John Paul II, "The whole of the catecheses...can be grasped under the title, `Human Love in the Divine Plan," or with greater precision, `the Redemption of the body & the Sacramentality of Marriage'....The first part is devoted to the analysis of the words of Christ....The second part of the catechesis is devoted to the analysis of the sacrament based on Ephesians (Eph 5:22 - 23), which goes back to the biblical beginning of marriage expressed in the words of Genesis, `a man will leave his father and mother and unite with his wife, and the two will be one flesh' (Gen 2:24)" (11/28/84).
