In a departure from L.M. Montgomery's book series, this third TV movie jumps ahead to World War I and puts Anne and her beloved Gilbert smack in the middle of it. Instead of marrying Gilbert after her teaching days--as she does in the books--Anne spends a disillusioning year with him in New York City, and then the couple quickly marries before the good doctor ships out to France. (In the book Rilla of Ingleside, Anne's sons go to war and her youngest daughter is separated from her sweetheart.) Impetuous as ever, Anne joins the Red Cross and crosses the pond to track down her husband when his letters are returned unread. What follows is an adventure that takes her through battle zones--where the bodies pile up faster than you can say Saving Private Ryan--and on to London with a half-orphaned baby, her best friend's injured husband, and a tangle of international intrigue. Fans of the 10-book series may balk at the divergences and the fact that very little time is spent on Prince Edward Island. But the book's unrestrained romanticism and unapologetic sentimentality remain intact, as well as the surviving cast of the prior two movies, most notably Megan Follows as Anne and Jonathan Crombie as Gilbert. This movie, produced in 2000, clocks in at 185 minutes and is suitable for ages 9 and older. --Kimberly Heinrichs

5 out of 5 stars Anne of Green Gables- the Continuing Story   August 29, 2010
k mct (nj)
After the reviews I'd read here on Amazon, I was wary about purchasing this movie. I'm glad I did buy it. My 10 year-old granddaughter and I both enjoyed it. We think this is a stand-alone movie...really not necessary to have seen the two previous Anne movies in order to follow/enjoy this movie (although we had seen both). Neither of us has read the books, so can't comment on how faithfully the books' storylines are followed. With that being said, sure, there are things to pick apart about the movie, but why? We liked it and enjoyed the time we shared.

1 out of 5 stars HORRID!   August 22, 2010

This is truly terrible. It has nothing to do with Anne of Green Gables, that's for sure. It reads like a bad soap opera! The charm of the story was killed! The love between Anne and Gil and Diana and Fred was stomped out. When they showed Green Gables in ruins I felt like someone punched my in the chest.
I wanted to barf at the thought of Anne and Fred together! Anne would never do that to her dearest friend, or her beloved Gilbert. I won't even go into the Jack nonsense. Anne would never be attracted to such a loser.
Oh and the wedding! Or lack there of I should say. Nothing from the books. Nothing. In this dumb movie they had a quickie wedding so Gil could go off to war.
They also took out all the national pride. In the book, the characters loved their country and were willing to sacrifice to protect it. Anne wouldn't go around whinning about the war.
All in all, tragedy. This movie is devoid of love.

2 out of 5 stars Too dark to be part of the series   August 15, 2010

I have to agree with the general dislike of this movie. I just think it's too much of a departure from the antics of younger Anne to be considered part of the series. It's completely different and there's nothing enjoyable about it. The entire movie is dark and gloomy, with nothing funny about it. Really disappointing.

3 out of 5 stars A Bend in the Road...   July 20, 2010

2000's "Anne of Green Gables - The Continuing Story" is Sullivan Entertainment's third "Anne" television production, following 1986's matchless "Anne of Green Gables" and 1987's excellent "Anne of Avonlea."

This story opens in 1915, as Anne Shirley returns to PEI after five years teaching in a Nova Scotia orphanage, to be reunited with fiancee Gilbert Blythe. Gilbert persuades Anne to join him in New York City while he completes a final year of residency at Bellevue Hospital.

The new York trip is a disaster. Gilbert quits after defying hospital staff over patient care, while hopeful author Anne is betrayed by a fellow writer.

Gilbert and Anne return to PEI for their long-delayed wedding. Immediately thereafter, Gilbert departs to join Canadian Forces in the war raging in Europe. When he goes missing, Anne volunteers for the Red Cross to search for him.

It is a delight to see Megan Follows and Jonathan Crombie reprise their roles as Anne and Gilbert and finally be wed. Less delightful is the decision by the producers to embed Anne, Gilbert, and a number of familiar Green Gables characters in a completely new, tangled and sometimes implausible storyline about the First World War. It may make for compelling viewing, but it isn't "Anne of Green Gables."

"Anne of Green Gables - The Continuing Story" gets a qualified recommendation. Those viewers who know Anne only from the Sullivan Entertainment films may not notice the new storyline; dedicated fans of Lucy Maud Montgomery's "Anne" novels may find it problematic at best.

A crime against the "Anne' series and an insult to the talent of Lucy Maude Montgomery!

This movie has nothing to do with the Anne stories! Waste of time, film & talent :( SO SAD.
