Amazon.com It's not surprising that My Big Fat Greek Wedding grew more popular over the course of its theatrical release (whereas most blockbusters open big and then drop precipitously)--not only does it have believable situations and engaging characters, but these characters (particularly our romantic heroine, Toula, played by writer and performer Nia Vardalos) look like actual human beings instead of plastic movie stars. The result is the very accessible tale of Greek-American Toula (whose family sees her as over the hill at 30), who falls for a WASPy guy named Ian (John Corbett) and then has to endure the outrage, doubt, and ultimate acceptance of her deeply ethnically centered family. The actors invest their wildly stereotypical portrayals with sincerity and compassion, giving the movie an honest warmth instead of Hollywood schmaltz. But My Big Fat Greek Wedding ultimately succeeds because of Vardalos; her intelligent, down-to-earth presence and charm carry the film. --Bret Fetzer
Description Toula Portokalos is a quiet, devoted daughter in a big, hectic, crazy Greek family. Working at her father's restaurant, "Dancing Zorba's," she hides behind a mop of mousy brown hair and thick, impenetrable glasses, keeping her family close and the world at a distance. But one day at the restaurant, she finds herself pouring coffee for a man so strikingly good-looking, that he inspires her to change her life - and the way she sees the world - forever. With a new hairdo, wardrobe, contact lenses, and most important of all, a whole new attitude, Toula steps out into the world a new woman, all ready to meet her man. Ian Miller is tall, handsome, but definitely not Greek. And whether he can handle Toula, her parents, her aunts, uncles, cousins and several centuries of Greek culture remains to be seen. But when you see the world through Toula's eyes, anything is possible!

My Big Fat Greek Wedding February 19, 2010 Arnita D. Brown (USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Toula Portokalos is 30, Greek, and works in her family's restaurant, Dancing Zorba's, in Chicago. All her father Gus wants is for her to get married to a nice Greek boy. But Toula is looking for more in life. Her mother convinces Gus to let her take some computer classes at college making him think it's his idea. With those classes under her belt, she then takes over her aunt's travel agency again making her father think it's his idea. She meets Ian Miller, a high school English teacher, WASP, and dreamboat she had made a fool of herself over at the restaurant; they date secretly for a while before her family finds out. Her father is livid over her dating a non-Greek. He has to learn to accept Ian; Ian has to learn to accept Toula's huge family, and Toula has to learn to accept herself. "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" is a wholesome and very enjoyable movie, with a lot of funny moments, that the whole family can enjoy.
Surprisingly effective January 8, 2010 Silence (Seattle) It even improves over repeat viewings. There is some very funny, unusual satire, tangible chemistry between Vardalos and Corbett, relentless, wild stereotypes that amazingly seem to humanize rather than degrade, and then this troublesome marriage arrangement that nevertheless makes it all look totally worthwhile. Definitely a good heart, with brilliant, humane touches all around. The extended relations are absurd but fascinating, a cake fully baked via the excellent casting of Gia Carides (cousin 'Nikki'), among others. Even Joey Fatone is good! It's quite a mystery. Not necessarily a 'chick flick' by the way, despite all the trappings--just a good, funny, and original movie, period.
One Of My Favorite Wedding Movies! July 14, 2009 Jena Brazda (Rohnert Park, Ca) This movie reminds me so much of my family that at so many points in the movie I was laughing knowing that my family is the same way. Yes this movie is not only about a wedding but finding love and in the mean time trying to please the family. I love John Corbett character he is down to earth and willing to do whatever he must not to lose his love, & Nia Vardalos transformation from the beginning of the movie till she finally discovers herself is something I enjoy, and of course the two of them together are great. Watch this movie and see for yourself I'm sure you can see your family in it at one point or another.
Film Impervious To Criticism July 11, 2009 David Baldwin (Philadelphia,PA USA) This is a film that occupies the rarified air of being hard to dislike. Comic ground isn't broke here but writer-star Nia Vardalos is such an engaging personality that you tend to overlook that. Explain, however, the phenomenon that this movie was in 2002. I was dating a Cuban lady that summer and she related to film because of it's portrayal of a tight-knit ethnic family. At the time I didn't really understand. Since then I've married into a tight-knit Polish American family and after many plates of kielbasi, pierogies, and gallons of borscht I get it. All I have to say is that Ian (John Corbett) is one patient dude.
What a delight!!! June 26, 2009 Robert Moore (Granbury, TX) This was such a surprise!!! Enjoyable and believable, this is a film that can be enjoyed by everyone of any age.
